6.6 Find a 20th Century Cannabis Cultural Reference

Q Find a cannabis cultural reference from the 20th century (1900-1999) and share it with the class. This will likely be a material culture piece--it can be a song, short clip, poster, newspaper article, etc. Give any background information you can about the piece. What year was it created? Where was it circulated? How was it used and who was the target audience? How effective do you think it was at achieving its goal? Analyze the cultural reference for its non-material cultural value. What ideas, beliefs, values, and ideologies are embedded in this reference? What does it tell you about the time period it was created? Use the concepts of "ideal culture" and "real culture" here, and explain any tensions present between the two. The article you read this week titled "The Importance of Cannabis Culture in Young Adult Cannabis Youth" makes the argument that cannabis culture used to exist on the fringes of society (a sub-culture or counter culture), but has now entered into the mainstream. Where does your cannabis cultural reference fall in this argument? Consider the year and the target audience, and also who created the piece. Finally, explain the concept of hegemony, as you understand it, and how hegemony has operated in relation to cannabis. Are any hegemonic narratives being presented or challenged in your selection? What is the purpose of these narratives?

The cannabis culture reference which I found was anti-marijuana culture started by Harry Anslinger and William Randolph Hearst. Hearst, through his newspapers, tried to persuade people by using fear against the use of cannabis. Hearst used racism as a tool against marijuana use. One of Hearst’s columns published: “Was it marijuana, the new Mexican drug, that nerved the murderous arm of Clara Phillips when she hammered out her victim’s life in Los Angeles?… THREE-FOURTHS OF THE CRIMES of violence in this country today are committed by DOPE SLAVES — that is a matter of cold record.” Hearst used different strategies to terrorize people who were in the majority.
